Shibukawa clan

Kyushu Tandai during the Muromachi period. A descendant of the Seiwa Genji clan and the Ashikaga clan. It is said that it began when Ashikaga Yoshiaki ruled Shibukawa-no-sho in Kozuke Province (Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture). During the Nanboku-cho period, he fought for the Ashikaga clan, and in 1365 (Shohei 20, Joji 4), Shibukawa Yoshiyuki was appointed as Kyushu Tandai. However, the Southern Court was too powerful, and he had to return to Kyoto without even setting foot in Kyushu. After that, when Imagawa Ryoshun (Sadayo), who had been Tandai, was dismissed in 1396 (Oei 3), Yoshiyuki's son Mitsuyori was appointed, and the position of Tandai was inherited by the Shibukawa clan. They were succeeded by Yoshitoshi, Norinao, Manjumaru, Yoshimoto, and Yoshinaga, but none of them had the power to govern Kyushu and only had the false title of Tandai. They gradually became puppets for the powerful Ouchi clan in the west, and were finally destroyed in 1534 (Tenbun 3) by an attack from Ouchi Yoshitaka.

室町時代の九州探題。清和源氏(せいわげんじ)足利(あしかが)流。足利義顕(よしあき)が上野国(こうずけのくに)渋川荘(しぶかわのしょう)（群馬県渋川市）を領したことに始まると伝えられる。南北朝期に足利氏に属して転戦し、1365年（正平20・貞治4）渋川義行(よしゆき)は九州探題に補任(ぶにん)された。しかし南朝方の勢力が強く、九州の地を踏むこともなく帰京せざるをえなかった。その後、探題となった今川了俊(いまがわりょうしゅん)（貞世(さだよ)）が1396年（応永3）に解任されると、義行の子満頼(みつより)が任ぜられ、探題職は以後渋川氏が継承するところとなった。義俊(よしとし)、教直(のりなお)、万寿丸(まんじゅまる)、義基(よしもと)、義長(よしなが)と続いたが、いずれも九州を統轄する力はなく、探題という虚名を有するのみとなり、西国の雄大内氏の傀儡(かいらい)と化していき、ついに1534年（天文3）大内義隆(おおうちよしたか)に攻められ滅亡した。
