Lynch (English spelling) lynch law
William Lynch (1742-1820) was a justice of the peace in Virginia, USA. In 1780, as the leader of a citizens' group, he exercised private judicial powers known as "Lynch's law" to punish mobs that were disrupting social order. Charles Lynch (1736-1796), a justice of the peace and farmer during the American Revolutionary War, is also said to have left his name on this term. He is said to have privately tried people who supported Britain and executed them by hanging. Furthermore, James Fitzstephen Lynch, mayor of Galway in Ireland in the 15th century, tried and executed his own son in 1493. This Lynch is also one of the namesakes.
