Sea lungwort

Japanese: ハマベンケイソウ（英語表記）sea lungwort

A perennial plant of the Violaceae family that grows in sandy coastal areas of Tohoku and Hokkaido. The entire plant is fleshy and resembles Crassulaceae plants. The stems fall to the sand and can reach 1m in length, branching frequently. The leaves are ovate, 3-7cm long and 2-5cm wide. Flowers appear in sparse snail-shaped inflorescences in July and August. The corolla is bell-shaped, 8-12mm long, and beautiful blue-purple. It opens slightly downward and has 5 lobes at the tip. The calyx tube is deeply lobed into 5, with sharply pointed lobes. The ovary is deeply lobed into 4, and after flowering it becomes 4 caryopsis. The caryopsis is fleshy.

東北および北海道の海岸の砂地に生えるムラサキ科の多年草。全体が多肉質で，ベンケイソウ科の植物に似ている。茎は砂地に倒れて長さ1mに達し，よく枝を分かつ。葉は卵形で長さ3～7cm，幅2～5cm。花は7～8月に，まばらなカタツムリ状花序につく。花冠は鐘形で長さ8～12mm，青紫色で美しい。やや下向きに開き，先端は5裂する。萼筒は5深裂し，裂片は鋭くとがる。子房は4深裂し，花後四つの分果となる。分果は肉質。
