The second Sultan of the Seljuk Empire. Reigned 1063-72. Nephew of Tughril Beg. He expanded his territory westward, and in 1071 he defeated the Byzantine army at the Battle of Malazgird in eastern Anatolia, paving the way for the Turkification of Anatolia. He supported the Abbasid Caliphate, and with the help of his vizier Nizam al-Mulk, he developed the military, administrative organization, and cultural facilities. During the Khwarezm campaign, he attempted to execute prisoners, but was killed instead. [Shimizu Kosuke]
