... Ningyo joruri. Historical piece. Five acts. A collaboration between Takeda Izumo, Namiki Senryu (Namiki Sosuke), Miyoshi Shoraku, and Takeda Koizumo. First performed at the Takemotoza in Osaka in August 1746 (Enkyo 3). Starring Takemoto Masatayu (2nd act), Takemoto Kodayu (3rd act), Takemoto Shimatayu (4th act), and Yoshida Bunzaburo (Suga no Shosho, Shirotayu, Chiyo). It was so well received that it continued for eight months until the following year. In February of the following year, 1747, it was performed at the Hizenza in Edo. It was a huge hit, thanks in part to the distribution of cheap tickets to teachers of handwriting throughout Edo, and it was a huge success, lasting for over a hundred days until August. As a kabuki play, it first appeared at the Nakamura Kiyosaburoza in Kyoto in September 1746, and was also performed at the Edo Nakamuraza in May of the following year. *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Three Great Kabuki Masterpieces" is listed below.
