…In 1896, the first international conference of publishers was held in Paris to discuss international cooperation in publishing. The person who most sincerely tried to realize this goal was probably the British publisher Sir Stanley Unwin (1884-1968). When the British Publishers Association (a small private association, but the most authoritative organization in the field of books) sent representatives of publishers and book dealers to Germany and the Netherlands in 1926 to inspect the publishing situation after World War I, Unwin was the head of the delegation and wrote an excellent report, which resulted in the formation of a cooperation committee in Britain to closely link publishers and book dealers. …
