While celebrities such as actors, entertainers, and athletes have less personal interest than ordinary people, they do have the financial interest of allowing third parties to use their name and likeness in return for compensation. When a person's likeness or name is used commercially for product advertising, etc., the financial interest that a person has is the right of publicity. In the United States, this is derived from the right to privacy and has been recognized through a large number of court cases, but has recently been codified in more than 10 states, including California.
