Japanese: ミズアブ(水虻) - ミズアブ

A general term for insects of the Dipteran family, Soldier Fly, or one of these species. The larvae of the soldier fly, Stratiomyis japonica (illustration), are aquatic and inhabit ponds, marshes, and rice fields. They are also known to sometimes inhabit hot springs along mountain streams where the water is warm, and are therefore also called Onsen-bu. They are found throughout Japan except for the Ryukyu Islands, and adults appear from June to October. They are large flies with a body length of 13 to 20 mm and yellow patterns on the lateral edges of their abdomens. The family Stratiomyiidae (English name soldier fly) includes many genera.

双翅目ミズアブ科の昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。ミズアブStratiomyis japonica（イラスト）の幼虫は，水生で池沼，水田などに生息する。ときには，山地の渓流沿いの水温の高い温泉の中にも生息することが知られ，オンセンアブとも呼ばれている。南西諸島を除く日本全国に分布し，成虫は6～10月に出現する。体長13～20mm，腹部側縁に黄色紋を有する大型のアブである。　ミズアブ科Stratiomyiidae(英名soldier fly)には多くの属を含む。
