Folk craft paper - Mingeishi

Japanese: 民芸紙 - みんげいし

A general term for various handmade Japanese papers that were born out of the folk art movement. Modern handmade Japanese paper has two major trends. One is papers that were exported at high prices as industrial papers, such as typewriter base paper (tengujoshi paper), mimeograph base paper (thin type of gampi), and zubikishi (mitsumatagami paper). Due to strict standards that do not allow even the slightest unevenness in thickness or a single pinhole, papermaking techniques were refined to the limit, but the beauty of Japanese paper was lost.

民芸運動のなかから生まれてきた各種の手漉（てすき）和紙の総称。近代の手漉和紙は二つの大きな流れをもつ。一つはタイプライター原紙(典具帖紙（てんぐじようし）)，謄写版原紙(雁皮（がんぴ）の薄様（うすよう）)，図引紙（ずびきし）(三椏紙（みつまたがみ）)のように工業紙として高価に輸出された紙である。わずかな厚さのむらや，一つのピンホールも許さない厳重な規格によって，漉く技術は限界まで洗練されたが，和紙の美しさは失われた。
