Madagascar periwinkle (periwinkle)

Japanese: ニチニチソウ(日々草) - ニチニチソウ（英語表記）Madagascar periwinkle

It is said to have originated in Madagascar, but is now widely cultivated and naturalized in tropical regions. It is a slightly woody perennial plant of the Apocynaceae family (illustration). It was introduced to Japan around 1780 (An'ei-Tenmei era). Improved varieties are widely cultivated in flower beds, potted plants, and as cut flowers. The plant is 30-60cm tall. The leaves are oblong, opposite and glossy, and in summer the axils produce two sympetalous flowers that are pale purple, white, or white with red eyes. The corolla has five lobes and a long flower tube. The capsule is long and slender, and when ripe it splits open vertically, scattering black seeds.

原産地はマダガスカルといわれているが，現在では熱帯地方に広く栽培，帰化しているキョウチクトウ科のやや木本性をおびた多年草（イラスト）。日本には1780年ころ(安永～天明)に渡来している。改良種は花壇や鉢植えに，また切花として広く栽培されている。草丈30～60cm。葉は長楕円形で対生，光沢があり，夏には葉腋（ようえき）に淡紫紅色，白色，白に赤目などの2個の合弁花をつける。花冠は5裂し，花筒は長い。蒴果（さくか）は細長く，熟せば縦に裂開して黒色の種子が飛散する。
