Author of the Tamil (South Indian) epic poem Silpadiharam (mid-5th century?), whose main character is Kannagi, the faithful wife of the merchant Kovalan. Date of birth and death unknown. His ideology is close to Jainism. His work and its sequel, Maṇimēkalai, written by a Buddhist, are collectively known as the "two great epics" of Tamil. 商人コーバランの貞淑な妻カンナギを主人公とするタミル(南インド)の叙事詩《シラパディハーラム》(5世紀中葉?)の作者。生没年不詳。思想的には,ジャイナ教に近い。彼の作品と,仏教徒が書いたその続編《マニメーハライmaṇimēkalai》は,併せてタミルの〈二大叙事詩〉と呼ばれている。伝説によると,彼はチェーラ朝の王シェングトゥバンの弟であったといわれる。【徳永 宗雄】
