[Explanation and Understanding]
Although it is difficult to distinguish between the two in Japanese, in the humanities, the act of explaining a text or the psychology or spirit behind it is often called "understanding" or "comprehension" (English: "understanding"; German: "Verstehen"). It means to "understand" or "make others understand" a text.

…The power of thought and cognition inherent to humans is generally called intellect or reason, and since ancient times has been said to include two aspects: understanding, which analyzes and argues according to rules, and reason, which intuitionally and insightfully perceives principles and origins, and oversees and governs them.
