The Miracle Story of the Virgin Mary

Miracle stories are Christian edifying stories in which sinners are saved from the devil through miraculous events that go beyond the causal relationships of the natural world, thanks to the intervention of God or saints. Many of these stories are related to the Virgin Mary, and form a genre known as the Miracle Stories of the Virgin Mary. Miracle stories primarily consist of biography, edification, and wonder, and generally originated as a branch of Christian hagiography, said to have begun with Jerome's Life of Paul at the end of the 4th century. Gradually, fictional wonders were added to the historical nature of the early stories, and in the 6th century, Gregory of Tours' Miracles appeared.

神や諸聖人の介入により，自然界の因果関係を超えた不思議な経緯によって罪の人が悪魔の手から救われるというキリスト教の教化的物語を奇跡物語という。この種の作品には，特に聖母マリアにまつわるものが多く，聖母奇跡物語として一つのジャンルを形成する。奇跡物語は伝記･教化･驚異を主要な要素としており，一般にキリスト教聖人伝の一部門として発生したもので，4世紀末，ヒエロニムスの《パウロ伝》に始まるとされる。初期の史伝的性格に次第に架空の驚異が加わり，6世紀には，トゥールのグレゴリウスの《奇跡集》が現れる。
