...The belief that Jizo guides all living beings through the six realms of existence is based on the ancient Japanese belief that Jizo gives birth to six Jizo statues at every intersection, or that Jizo appears as a young monk, and has been syncretized with the indigenous roadside gods, leading to the development of the belief in "Sai no Kawara," in which Jizo saves children from demons in hell. During the Edo period, countless substitute Jizo statues were created by the people, including the Longevity Jizo, the Belly Band Jizo, the Child-raising Jizo, and the One-Eyed Jizo, and in addition to providing substitute benefits in this life, Jizo also provides salvation in the afterlife, making him the most familiar bodhisattva to Japanese people to this day.
