Alois Hába

Czech composer. He introduced the microtonal scale, which is based on intervals narrower than the semitones of the normal temperament, into music and further deepened its theory. His exploration of microtonality was greatly influenced by his parents, who were folk musicians, and by his own experience transcribing folk songs. After studying in Prague, Vienna, and Berlin, he became professor of microtonal music at the Prague State Conservatory from 1923 to 1951. After World War II, he became more nationalistic. His representative works include the opera "Mother" (premiered in Munich in 1931), "Thy Kingdom Come" (1939-42), and "Four Nonetts" (No. 1 1931-32, No. 2 1932, No. 3 1953, No. 4 1963).

チェコの作曲家。通常の平均律の半音よりも狭い音程に基づく微分音音階を音楽に取り入れ、さらに理論的に深めた。彼の微分音の探求には、民謡音楽家であった両親や自らの民謡採譜経験が大きな影響を与えている。プラハ、ウィーン、ベルリンで学んだのち、1923～51年、プラハ国立音楽院で微分音科の教授となる。第二次世界大戦後は民族主義的傾向を強くする。代表作にオペラ『母』（1931・ミュンヘン初演）、『汝(なんじ)の王国の来らんことを』（1939～42）、『四つの九重奏曲』（第一番1931～32、第二番1932、第三番1953、第四番1963）など。
