Hanayasai coral - Hanayasai coral

Japanese:
Hanayasai coral - Hanayasai coral

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Coelenterata, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia, order Scleractinia, family Vegetable corals. It is commonly found in shallow coral reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The colonies are repeatedly bifurcated, forming clumps with a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. The name comes from the resemblance of the colony to a flowering vegetable (cauliflower). Among the suborder Acanthocorallia, this species has periteca, a skeleton that develops between adjacent capsules, and belongs to the Vegetable coral family, which has no peliteca. The capsules on the skeletal surface of this species are almost closely packed together, making it appear as if there are no periteca, but the capsules narrow downwards, where the periteca develop. It is distinguished from other genera in the Vegetable coral family by the fact that the septa are only vestigial. When alive, the colonies are pale pink or cloudy green-brown, the polyps are pale pink, and there are 12 transparent tentacles. The polyps grow day and night. They are commonly found on rocky reefs several meters from the intertidal zone south of the Kii Peninsula. Various coral crabs live between the branches, and coral-inhabiting crabs form galls and parasitize them.
