During the Kamakura period, the Shogunate was given fiefs, which were provinces given by the Imperial Court. As fief lords, the Shogunate controlled the kokuga (provincial offices) and appointed vassals as kokushi (provincial governors) to handle national affairs. According to the entry for 1186 in the Azuma Kagami, Minamoto no Yoritomo's domain as the basis for the Shogunate's finances consisted of nine provinces: Suruga, Izu, Sagami, Kazusa, Shimousa, Musashi, Shinano, Echigo, and Bungo. During the Muromachi period, these included the eight Kanto provinces (Musashi, Sagami, Awa, Kazusa, Shimousa, Hitachi, Kozuke, and Shimotsuke) that were under the jurisdiction of the Kamakura shogunate, as well as Kai and Izu.
