A general term for parasitic worms belonging to the family Paragonimidae of the class of trematodes. Also called pulmonary flukes. Approximately 30 species have been described worldwide, of which six species parasitize humans and cause paragonimiasis. In Japan, Paragonimus westermanii was previously thought to be the only parasite to humans, but since 1974, cases of human infection with P. miyazakii , which was thought to be a parasite of wild animals such as weasels and martens, have been reported.
