Also known as lunate softening, this is a disease in which the lunate bone in the hand undergoes necrosis and softening. It was first described in 1910 by Austrian radiologist Robert Kienböck (1871-1953). It is most common in men aged 18 to 30, and is most commonly seen in people whose occupations require frequent use of the wrist (carpenters, farmers, etc.). There is pain when moving the wrist, and the pain goes away when the wrist is rested without being used. There is tenderness in the lunate bone on the dorsal side of the wrist, and although it rarely worsens suddenly, it progresses chronically and gradually restricts dorsiflexion and palmar flexion of the hand. Although resting and heat therapy and massage are used to improve local blood circulation, complete recovery is difficult. Surgical treatment is often required. It is necessary to see an orthopedic specialist. [Takashi Nagai] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
