Shishiran - Shishiran

An evergreen fern of the family Lamiumaceae. Also called Iwahimo or Iwahige. It grows on rocks and tree trunks in the mountains. Thin, linear, glossy, thick, leathery leaves grow densely from short rhizomes. They are 50 centimeters long and 4 to 7 millimeters wide. The midvein is noticeably raised on the underside, and sporangia are produced in the grooves embraced by the leaf margins. It is found in warm areas west of the Boso Peninsula.

シシラン科の常緑性シダ。イワヒモ、イワヒゲともいう。山中の岩石、樹幹に着生する。短い根茎から、細い線形でつやのある厚い革質の葉を密生する。長さ50センチメートル、幅4～7ミリメートル。中脈は裏側に著しく隆起し、葉縁に抱かれた溝の中に胞子嚢(のう)群が生じる。房総半島以西の暖地に分布する。
