A new theory of self-organization proposed by Humberto Romesín Maturana (1928-2021) and Varela. It refers to a process in which cells, nervous systems, and organisms autonomously generate order by repeating the cycle of creating themselves. It has attracted attention as a theory that explains the truly dynamic aspects of life and social phenomena. Hideo Kawamoto (1953- ) positions classical dynamic equilibrium systems as the first generation, self-organization as the second generation, and autopoiesis as the third generation system. The characteristic of autopoiesis is that the system is closed, that is, reproduction occurs without any external input or output. In other words, it can be said that the active and productive function of self-referentiality is attracting attention.
