…Aristocrats descended from the Northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. In medieval documents, it is also written as "Kuwanshuushi." Its founder was Fujiwara Takafuji, Minister of the Interior, Emperor Daigo's maternal grandfather. Takafuji's son, Minister of the Right, Sadakata, built Kanshu-ji Temple in Yamashina, Kyoto, as the clan's family temple, and the clan's highest ranking official was the head of the family, so the temple name became the general name for the clan. During the Insei period, the clan prospered rapidly after Tamefusa and Akitaka, father and son, served as trusted vassals of the Shirakawa Retired Emperor.
