Gifu City is located in the southern part of Gifu Prefecture, in the northern part of the Nobi Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. The central area was originally called Inokuchi, and during the Sengoku period, Saito Dosan built a castle on Mt. Kinka on the left bank of the Nagara River, creating a castle town. After Oda Nobunaga entered the castle in 1567, Inokuchi was renamed Gifu, and it developed as a castle town and commercial town. On the border with Kakamigahara City, there is the Gifu-Kakamigahara Interchange entrance on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway, which is connected to the Tokaido Main Line and Meitetsu lines, and is the starting point of the Takayama Main Line. There are many large spinning and weaving factories, which account for about 15% of the city's manufactured goods shipment value (2003), and the wholesale district in front of Gifu Station is a lively place for trading ready-made clothes. Gifu lanterns, Japanese umbrellas, and fans have long been local specialties. Gifu Park is located on the ruins of Gifu (Inaba) Castle, and cormorant fishing is held on the Nagara River. There is also the Nawa Insect Museum. In January 2006, Yanaizu Town, Hashima County, was incorporated. 203.60 km2 . 413,136 people (2010). → Related topics Ogawa City | Kano | Kano City | Kano Domain | Gifu [Prefecture] | Gifu Castle | Gifu University | Mizuho [City] | Yamagata [City] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
