…In 1782, they further increased the thermal efficiency by supplying steam alternately to both sides of the piston and utilizing the expansive force of steam. Later, they used a governor to automatically adjust the amount of steam supplied to the cylinder, allowing proper operation, and thus perfected the practical steam engine. The steam engine, which had been developed in this way, was widely used from around 1780 not only to pump water from mines, but also as a prime mover for machine tools, textile machines, and other general factories. Around 1800, the steam engine made a great contribution to factories and transportation, with the practical application of steamships by William Symington (1763-1831), R. Fulton, and others, and the completion of the steam locomotive by G. Stevenson, and it literally became the driving force of mechanical civilization and occupied a unique position. The 19th century can be said to be the age of the all-powerful steam engine. …
