...Instruments with metal lumps arranged in a keyboard shape instead of bells began to be used in the Netherlands and northern France, where carillons were popular. The keys were originally cylindrical, but in the 17th century, metal-sounding salons and gambangs of gamelan were introduced to the Netherlands, and under their influence, the Hemony brothers, François and Pieter, who were known for casting carillons, improved them to the plate shape we see today.
