Lubok (English spelling)

Japanese: ルボーク（英語表記）lubok

This refers to Russian folk prints. They first appeared in Russia after the 17th century, but the term, referring to the bark used to make woodblock prints, was first used in the 1820s by the customs and manners researcher Snegiryov. At first woodblock prints were used, later copperplate and lithograph prints, and sometimes hand-colored prints were added. By extension, lubok also refers to inexpensive popular literature that uses these prints as illustrations. The subjects are extremely diverse, including religious tales and myths from the Bible, calendars, arithmetic, geography, astronomy, history, literature, textbooks on reading, social customs, and folk tales.

ロシア民衆版画のこと。ロシアに現れたのは17世紀以降であるが，木版の素材となる樹皮を意味するこの言葉が使われるようになったのは1820年代，風俗研究家スネギリョフによってである。最初は木版が，のちに銅版や石版が使われ，さらに手書きで彩色が加えられることもあった。転じてルボークはこの版画を挿絵とした廉価版の大衆向け文学をも意味する。題材は，聖書からの宗教説話や神話，暦や算数，地理学や天文学，歴史や文学，文字教科書，世態風俗や昔話などきわめて多様である。
