First World

(1885-1920) Born in Kyoto. He made his stage debut in 1890 (Meiji 23) under the stage name Nakamura Shotaro. In 1898 he changed his name to Nakamura Matagoro and served as the head of a children's play at the Shintomi-za Theatre in Tokyo, where he gained popularity on a par with the first Nakamura Kichiemon. From 1917 (Taisho 6) he moved to the Park Theatre in Asakusa, where he was a star actor in small plays, but died young in 1920. He was good-looking and particularly suited to wagoto (Japanese-style play).

(1914-2009) His real name was Nakamura Yukio. He was the eldest son of the first Nakamura. He was born in Tokyo. He lost his father at the age of six, and made his stage debut the following year in 1921 (Taisho 10) under the name Matagoro II. He was praised as a brilliant child actor. As he grew older, he played a wide range of roles from leading roles to female roles as a mid-level executive in the Nakamura Kichiemon Theater Company. In 1961 (Showa 36), he moved to Toho along with Matsumoto Koshiro VIII (later known as Hakuō) and others. He also passionately taught as the head instructor of actor training at the National Theater. In 1997 (Heisei 9), he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) as a supporting actor.

初世

(1885―1920)京都生まれ。1890年(明治23)中村正太郎の芸名で初舞台。1898年中村又五郎と改名して東京・新富(しんとみ)座の子供芝居の座頭(ざがしら)を勤め、初世中村吉右衛門(きちえもん)と並んで人気をとる。1917年(大正6)以後は浅草の公園劇場に移り、小芝居の花形俳優として活躍したが、1920年に早世した。容姿に優れ、とくに和事(わごと)に適した。

2世

(1914―2009)本名中村幸雄。初世の長男。東京生まれ。6歳で父を失い、翌1921年(大正10)2世又五郎の名で初舞台。名子役と評判された。長じては中村吉右衛門劇団の中堅幹部として立役(たちやく)から女方(おんながた)まで幅広い役柄で活躍。1961年(昭和36)から、8世松本幸四郎(後の白鸚(はくおう))らとともに東宝に移籍。国立劇場の俳優養成の主任講師としても情熱的に指導にあたった。1997年(平成9)、脇役(わきやく)として重要無形文化財保持者(人間国宝)に認定された。
