Atsushi Iso

Atsushi Iso
1827-1876 A samurai and Confucian scholar from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born in 1827. A samurai of Akizuki Domain, Chikuzen (Fukuoka Prefecture). He studied under Ohashi Totsuan and Fujimori Koan in Edo, and became a professor at the domain school, Keikokan. In 1870, he became a junior councilor for the domain. In 1876, in response to the Kumamoto Shinpuren Rebellion, he led a revolt with Miyazaki Kurumasuke and other former samurai, but it was suppressed (the Akizuki Rebellion), and he committed suicide on October 28 of the same year. He was 50 years old. His original name was Shinzo.

文政10年生まれ。筑前(ちくぜん)(福岡県)秋月藩士。江戸の大橋訥庵(とつあん),藤森弘庵にまなび,藩校稽古館の教授となる。明治3年藩の少参事。9年熊本神風連の乱に呼応し,宮崎車之助らと旧士族をひきいて挙兵するが鎮圧され(秋月の乱),同年10月28日自決。50歳。初名は信蔵。
