A small crustacean of the order Pelecanidae and family Pelecanidae (illustration). It lives in intertidal pools and on the sandy, muddy bottom of shallow seas, and at first glance resembles a small shrimp, with a body length of about 1 cm, but the front of the thorax and abdomen is covered by a large, bivalve-like carapace with adductor muscles on both sides. There is a joint at the tip of the carapace, and it has a movable spatula-shaped rostrum. Beneath this rostrum are movable, stalked compound eyes. The whole body is yellowish-white in color. It feeds on organic debris and is said to be a filter feeder, but it is also carnivorous and scavenging, as it will eat fish caught in longlines.
