A Danish royal dynasty since 1863. A branch of the House of Ollenborg (1448-1863), they inherited the throne after the death of the childless Danish King Frederick VII in 1863. Prince Christian, whose spouse was Frederick VII's cousin and therefore held the right to the throne under the Treaty of London in 1852, took the name Christian IX (reigned 1863-1906) and became the founder of the dynasty. Their eldest son succeeded to the throne as Frederick VIII, their eldest daughter Alexandra married the future King Edward VII of England, their second son Wilhelm became King of Greece (George I), and their second daughter Dagmar married Tsar Alexander III of Russia, making the family a well-known royal family.
