Martin Schongauer

German painter and printmaker. The exact year of his birth is unknown. He was born as the son of a blacksmith in Augsburg. He worked mainly in Colmar, and later in life he moved to Breisach, where he died on February 2nd. His only surviving panel painting is the Madonna of the Rose Hedge (St. Martin's Church, Colmar), painted in 1473, which shows the influence of Flemish painting, especially Weiden. This Madonna, full of deep inner life, is one of the treasures of late German Gothic painting. His most notable fresco work is the Last Judgment on the west wall of the sanctuary of Breisach Cathedral, which he was commissioned to create in 1488, but it was removed in 1931. His most notable field of expression is copperplate engraving, of which 115 works remain. His highly expressive prints, which imbued sacred subjects with earthly emotion, foreshadowed the early modern era, and his techniques, including his interpretation of perspective, fascinated and influenced the young Dürer.

ドイツの画家、版画家。出生年の詳細は不明。アウクスブルクの鍛冶(かじ)職の息子として生まれる。主としてコルマールで仕事をし、晩年ブライザハに移って2月2日同地で死去した。現存する唯一の確実な板絵の作品は、1473年作の『バラの籬(まがき)のマドンナ』（コルマール、聖マルティン教会）で、そこにはフランドル絵画、とくにワイデンの影響がうかがわれる。深い内面性をたたえたこの聖母像は、ドイツ後期ゴシック絵画の至宝の一つである。フレスコ作品では、88年に依頼を受けて制作したブライザハ聖堂の内陣西壁の『最後の審判』が知られるが、1931年に取り払われた。彼のもっとも注目すべき表現分野は銅版画で、115点の作品が現存する。聖なる主題に現世の情感を通わせた表現力豊かな彼の版画には、すでに近世が予告され、遠近法の解釈をはじめとするその技法は、若いデューラーを魅了し影響を与えた。
