One of the powerful clans of ancient times. Originally a member of the Mononobe clan, the clan was based in Yamato Province, Yamabe County (present-day Furu Town, Tenri City), where they performed the rituals at Isonokami Shrine, which worshiped the sword god of the Yamato Imperial Court. In 684 (Tenmu 13), Mononobe Maro was given the surname Ason by Muraji, and from that time on, the Maro clan took the Isonokami clan as its surname. In 691 (Jito 5), along with 17 other clans such as Omiwa and Suzumebe, they were ordered to submit the grave records of their ancestors. Maro later rose to the position of Minister of the Left, and his son Otomaro also rose to the position of Chunagon, making them prominent in the political world in the first half of the 8th century.
