A daily colonial newspaper published in Korea, it played a role as a quasi-official gazette for the Government-General of Korea. It was founded on September 1, 1906, just before the Japan-Korea Annexation (1910), by the governor-general of Korea, Hirobumi Ito, and was named by the purchase and merger of two newspapers, the Hanseong Shinbo and the Daedong Ilbo. It was published by the Keijo Ilbo Company. Along with the English-language newspaper The Seoul Press, which was founded at the same time, it was a powerful media organ of the Japanese Government-General, in contrast to Korean-language newspapers such as the Daehan Maeil Shinbo that took an anti-Japanese stance.
