Back mountain

Japanese: 後山 - うしろやま
Back mountain
A mountain in the eastern part of the Chugoku Mountains, on the border between Mimasaka City, Okayama Prefecture and Shiso City, Hyōgo Prefecture. It is 1,344 meters above sea level and the highest peak in Okayama Prefecture. There is a sacred site here that is said to have been established by En no Ozunu. Every year on September 7th, a large Saito Goma ceremony is held, during which many believers, led by mountain priests, gather water in the valley stream and perform ascetic practices at 49 training sites. Until the mid-Edo period, only ascetic monks were allowed to enter the mountain, but it gradually became a place of popular faith. However, women are still not allowed to enter, although they are allowed to climb up to the women's hall halfway up the mountain. There are natural forests of cedar, maple, and beech trees in the surrounding area, and it is part of the Hyōnosen-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park.
