Flower bud formation - Kaga Keisei (English spelling) flower‐bud formation
In the shoot apex of flowering plants, buds and leaves are produced one after another during the vegetative growth period, but as the day length changes, the differentiation transition from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, that is, from bud formation to flower bud formation, occurs. There are three types of plants: short-day plants (rice, chrysanthemum, cocklebur, morning glory, etc.), which form flower buds when the day length shortens, long-day plants (wheat, barley, spinach, radish, etc.), which do not form flower buds unless the day length increases, and neutral-day plants (tomato, buckwheat, cucumber, kidney bean, etc.), which form flower buds regardless of the day length.
