Horse-headed Kannon

One of the six Kannon. Its Sanskrit name is Hayagriva. It is an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Kannon, with a horse's head on top, and is characterized by its appearance, resembling the jeweled horse of the Wheel-Turning King, galloping around and intimidating the surroundings, hence the name Bato Kannon. It is said that this Kannon represents the force of subjugating the four demons to the ocean of life and death with a horse. It is said to be based on the Hindu myth of the goddess Toka defeating the Asuras. There are statues of this Bodhisattva with one face and two arms, three faces and four arms, or four faces and eight arms, and the appearance is not necessarily consistent. In later times, it was commonly worshiped as a prayer for the safety and illness of horses, and carved into stones by the roadside with the name Bato Dasya.

六観音の一つ。サンスクリット名はハヤグリバHayagriva。観世音菩薩(ぼさつ)の化身で、頭上に馬頭をいただき、さながら転輪聖王(てんりんじょうおう)の宝馬が駆け巡って四囲を威圧するような姿をその特徴とし、その形相から馬頭観音の名称がある。この観音は、生死の大海に四魔を降伏(ごうぶく)する勢いを馬で表したものという。ヒンドゥー教における突迦(とか)女神のアスラ退治神話を素材にしたといわれる。この菩薩には一面二臂(ひ)、三面四臂あるいは四面八臂の像があり、その形相はかならずしも一定していない。後世、俗に馬の病気と安全を祈願し、路傍に馬頭大士などと石に刻んで信仰される。
