This condition is common among girls in their teens, in which the patient pulls out body hair, especially scalp hair, with their own hands. The hair that has been pulled out thins out and looks unsightly, but the essence of trichotillomania lies in the compulsive urge to pull it out despite knowing this, and it is considered a unique type of neurosis. The usual explanation is that the patient tries to release uncontrollable anger or aggression by pulling out their hair, but there are also views that it is a compensation for masturbation, or a defense against the desire to masturbate.
