A general term for insects belonging to the Brassolidae family of the Lepidoptera order (illustration). They are closely related to the Satyridae family and include the large Caligo genus, the small Opsiphanes genus, and the Napoleon's Dinastor genus, which has a slightly retracted head and looks like it is buried. They have a wingspan of 4.5 to 14 cm and are found in tropical and subtropical areas from Mexico to South America. Species of the Brassolidae genus have a large eye-like pattern on their hind wings, and when they open their wings, the pair of eyes resembles an animal's eyes, which is said to be effective in scaring off predatory natural enemies such as birds.
