Bat fan - Kawahoriougi
〘Noun〙 (From the fact that the open shape resembles the spread wings of a bat) A fan with several ribs covered in paper. Sensu (folding fan) . Kawahori. ※Koyuuki - 24th leap month of June, 4th year of the Chowa era (1015) "Today, Middle Counselor Yukinari holds two bat fans , which is not an exclusive matter" [Ethology] (1) It is said that it was made based on the spread wings of a bat. (Meigoki, Kakaisho, Jinzoe Tsubosho, Kokin Enkaku Ko) It seems to have been a more informal version of the hi-ogi fan used for formal occasions.
(2) In the beginning, pictures were painted on paper that was pasted on only one side of the thin bones, and there were five-boned, seven-boned, and other varieties. During the Muromachi period, the prototype of today's folding fans, in which paper is pasted on both sides of the bones, was created, and they became ornately made with gold and silver paint. Fans with a strongly curved tip are also called suehiro.
(3) It is depicted in the Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll from the early 12th century, and the original is kept at Itsukushima Shrine.
