A village in Nakakubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Population 6,452 (1995). It is located in the eastern part of the Takada Plain, and its eastern edge forms the western foot of the Higashikubiki Hills. The area has been developed since ancient times, and remains of the ancient jori system remain. There are many reservoirs, and in the early modern period the Kamie irrigation canal was opened, making it a central producer of Joetsu rice. As it is adjacent to Joetsu City, there are many commuters to Takada and Naoetsu. The Mizushina burial mounds (history) were excavated in 1975. 新潟県南部,中頸城(なかくびき)郡の村。人口6452(1995)。高田平野東部にあり,東端は東頸城丘陵の西麓をなす。古くから開発された地で,古代の条里制の遺構が残る。溜池が多く,近世には上江用水も開かれ,上越米の中心産地となった。上越市に隣接することから高田,直江津への通勤者も多い。1975年に発掘された水科(みずしな)古墳群(史)がある。【佐藤 裕治】
