Graduated from the University of Chicago, he taught at the University of Minnesota from 1924 to 1940, and at the University of Wisconsin from 1940 to 1970. He initially researched agricultural geography and industrial geography. In 1939, he published The Nature of Geography, in which he presented a view of geography that was strongly influenced by Hettner's, that is, "geography is fundamentally a science that describes and explains regional differentiation."
