An ancient Egyptian god. He was the embodiment of the fertility of the bull and the god of fertility and prosperity. In the festivals held before the harvest, lettuce (whose juice was believed to have an aphrodisiac effect) was offered to him. He is depicted standing upright with his right hand bent upwards, holding a flail, a symbol of royal power, and his left hand tucked under his clothes and holding a huge, erect sacred penis. He wears two large feathers on his head. The main centers of his worship were Coptos and Panopolis, and temples remain in both places. The Greeks identified him with Pan, and in Luxor, the god Amun was depicted as Min. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
