(1) Regarding function systems: If we consider the Fourier series of f(x), a system of continuous real-valued functions _ψ1 ( x ), _ψ2 ( x ), ... defined in a closed interval [ a , b ] for any continuous real-valued function f ( x ) defined in the same interval, then Bessel's inequality holds: the sum of the squares of the inner products of f and _ψk does not exceed the square norm of f . If this equality always holds, then the function system is said to be complete. (2) Regarding metric spaces: A metric space is complete if any Cauchy sequence in it converges. For example, the real numbers are complete, but the rational numbers are not.
