Year of death: March 14, 1824 (April 13, 1824)
Year of birth: July 16, 7th year of the Horeki era (August 30, 1757)
A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. A samurai of the Kii domain. Commonly known as Yoshinai. His pen name was Suigetsu. He was the eldest son of Hattori San'emon Tokinaka. He was from Matsusaka, Ise (Mie Prefecture), and his family had served the domain for generations. In 1787 (Tenmei 7) at the age of 31, he was employed by his father's successor, and after serving as a controlling accountant and then as a private servant at Matsusaka Castle. After the death of his wife, he retired in 1808 (Bunka 5). He became a monk, took the names Suigetsuan Mo'o and Mita Suigetsu, and lived in Kyoto. As a scholar of Japanese classics, he became a disciple of Motoori Norinaga in 1785 at the age of 29. He eventually wrote "Sandaikou," which illustrated the creation of the springs of heaven and earth, based on the interpretation of the Kojiki and Nihon shoki. This work was praised by Norinaga and was included in the seventeenth volume of "Kojiki-den," and influenced Hirata Atsutane's main work "Reino Shinbashira." Later, Chuyo and Atsutane became kindred spirits and shared a toast as sworn brothers. <References> Masayuki Nakanishi, "The Life of Chuyo Hattori" (Shinto Religion, Nos. 75-79)
