This is one of the oldest collections of medieval Latin lyric poetry, transcribed and compiled in the 11th century. It is known by this name because it is currently housed in the Cambridge University Library. Most of the 49 poems included in this collection were written in the Lower Rhine region, with the rest composed by learned monks in France, Italy, and other countries. It also contains a small number of excerpts from classical Latin poetry, giving it a strong continental flavor as a collection of medieval lyric poetry. Half of the collection is a hymn sequence (sequentiae), but it also contains religious lyric poems about the Virgin Mary, the Resurrection, and the lives of the saints, as well as poems on historical themes such as coronation poems for kings and princes, doxology, and funeral eulogy.

11世紀に書写編纂された，もっとも古い中世ラテン抒情詩集の一つ。現在ケンブリッジ大学図書館に収蔵されているためにこの名で知られている。収録されている49編中の詩の大半は下ライン川流域で作られ，残りはフランス，イタリアなどの学僧たちの作であり，わずかではあるが古典期ラテン詩からの抜粋も含まれていて，中世抒情詩集としては大陸色の濃い特徴をもつものである。半ばは賛美歌続唱(セクエンティアエ)であるが，聖母マリア，キリスト復活，聖者伝などの宗教的抒情詩，王侯の戴冠式祝詩，頌徳詩，葬礼追悼詩など歴史上のできごとをテーマにした諸詩編もある。
