Proust
French author. His father, Adrien, was the Superintendent General of Hygiene and a professor of hygiene at the University of Paris. His mother was from a Jewish merchant family. He suffered from asthma from the age of nine throughout his life. After entering the law school at the University of Paris, he frequented high society and literary salons, published a collection of lyrical short essays called Pleasures and Days (1896), and translated Ruskin, continuing his literary explorations. The death of his beloved mother in 1905 marked a turning point for him, and he conceived his masterpiece In Search of Lost Time, which he continued to write until a few days before his death, despite his ill health. Of the seven stories in total, the fifth and subsequent stories were published posthumously. This work ushered in a new era of 20th-century novels, and had a great influence on authors both in Japan and abroad. His other works include the unfinished autobiographical novel Jean Santeuil and a collection of essays Against Sainte-Beuve.
