A general term for a waistband used to exaggerate the fullness of the back of a skirt. This type has existed since the Middle Ages and is called a foxtail. In the 16th century it was called a bumroll, and in the 17th century it was called various other names. The word bustle did not come to mean a waistband until about 1830.
