A great hero who appears in the heroic legends of the Germanic people. There are two strands of the Siegfried legend. One is about Siegfried, who is related to the family of Walsung, who was favored by Odin, the chief god of Norse legend, and appears in the Icelandic epic poem "Edda". The other is a fragmentary heroic tale that has existed throughout Germany since ancient times, and Siegfried, who appears in the first part of "The Nibelungenlied", was born by combining these. He eventually becomes the protagonist of the third and fourth parts of Wagner's music drama "The Ring of the Nibelung" (1853-70). "The Nibelungenlied" was written around the beginning of the 13th century, and the Siegfried who appears in it is a prince of the Lower Netherlands on the Rhine. He steals the Tarnkappe, a "cloak of invisibility" from a dwarf named Albreich, and gains the strength of 12 men. He slays an evil dragon, and is covered in its blood, which causes his skin to turn keratinous, making him an immortal warrior. However, at this time, a linden leaf happens to fall and land on his back, making it his fatal weak spot. He is then stabbed to death by his brother-in-law, Hagen, as he bends over a spring. Siegfried's status as a hero to the German people can also be seen from the fact that the line of forts built to counter the French Maginot Line before World War II was named the "Siegfried Line." One of his plays is Giraudoux's "Siegfried" (1928). [Hideo Funato] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
