Among the Ukiyo-zoshi (Japanese folklore stories), this refers to works published by Kyoto's Yamozuya Yazaemon from 1701 (Genroku 14) onwards, from "Keisei Irojamisen" (The Irregularly Colored Shamisen) through the 1770s. It can also refer to works by the main author, Ejima Kiseki, published by other publishers, works by other authors of the same period or tendency, and derivative works up to the 1780s. This term was first used in the 1800s, when Yamozuya was in decline, and has been passed down as a term in modern literary history. Thanks to the talented writing of Kiseki, Tada Nanrei and others, it became the mainstream of Ukiyo-zoshi after Saikaku, which led to the rise of Yamozuya, and it also expanded into Edo, where it influenced late Edo literature. In his early days he wrote erotic stories, but later he wrote many long period dramas adapted from theatrical plays, which were highly praised for their unusual themes and ingenious structure.
