A monk from the early Kamakura period. His father was the second shogun, Minamoto no Yoriie, and his mother was the daughter of Kamo no Shigenaga. His childhood name was Zenzai. He grew up with Miura Yoshimura as his wet father, and after his father was deposed from his position as shogun, he became a disciple of Songyo, the head priest of Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Temple. In 1206, he became the adopted son of Shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo, but in 1211, he became a monk and took the name Kugyo. He then went to Kyoto and trained at Miidera Temple, and in 1217, he was accepted as the head priest of Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Temple. However, he targeted his uncle Sanetomo as his father's enemy, and immediately after Sanetomo's ceremony to become the Minister of the Right in January 1219, he killed Sanetomo and his swordsman Minamoto no Nakaaki, and ran to Miura Yoshimura with the head, shouting, "This is how I will kill my father's enemy," but was killed instead. Thus, the Minamoto clan was wiped out after three generations. Since ancient times, there have been various theories about who was behind the assassination of Sanetomo, but the truth remains unknown.

鎌倉前期の僧。父は2代将軍源頼家,母は賀茂重長の娘。幼名は善哉。三浦義村を乳父として成長し,父が将軍職を廃されてのち,鶴岡八幡宮寺別当の尊暁の弟子となり,建永1(1206)年には将軍源実朝の猶子となるが建暦1(1211)年に落飾して公暁と称した。次いで上洛して三井寺で修行したのち,建保5(1217)年に鶴岡八幡宮寺の別当に迎えられた。しかし叔父実朝を父の敵と狙って,承久1(1219)年1月の実朝の右大臣拝賀の儀式の直後に,実朝と剣役の源仲章を殺害すると,「親の敵はかく討つぞ」と叫んでその首を持って三浦義村の許に駆け付けたが,そこで逆に殺害される。こうして源氏は3代で滅んだ。古来,実朝暗殺の黒幕をめぐって諸説があるが,真相は不明。
